More than two thousand years ago, Rome became one of the most powerful cities in the ancient world. What started as a small settlement in Italy slowly grew into the centre of a huge empire. At its strongest, the Roman Empire controlled large areas of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Millions of people lived under Roman rule, and Roman culture influenced language, law, architecture, transport, and government for centuries.
However, life in Ancient Rome was very different depending on who you were.
A rich Roman family could live in a large and comfortable house called a domus. These homes often had several rooms, decorated walls, small gardens, and open areas that allowed light and fresh air inside. Wealthy families sometimes owned servants or enslaved people who cooked meals, cleaned the house, carried water, and performed other daily tasks.
Most Romans, however, were not rich.
Many ordinary people lived in apartment buildings called insulae. Some of these buildings were several floors high and could contain many families. The lower floors were usually more expensive because they were easier to reach and safer. Poorer families often lived on the highest floors.
These buildings were not always comfortable. Some apartments had no running water, and people had to carry water upstairs. Fires were also a serious danger because many buildings were made partly of wood, and people used fire for cooking and heating.
Despite these difficulties, Rome was a busy and exciting city.
Its streets were full of shops, markets, animals, carts, workers, soldiers, and visitors. Merchants sold bread, fruit, vegetables, clothes, jewellery, and many other products. People came to Rome from different parts of the empire, so many languages could be heard in the streets.
Food was an important part of Roman life. Poor Romans often ate simple meals such as bread, vegetables, beans, and a type of porridge. Wealthier people could enjoy meat, fish, fruit, cheese, and expensive foods brought from distant parts of the empire.
One popular Roman sauce was called garum. It was made from fish and salt and was added to many dishes. To modern people, this may sound unusual, but Romans used it in the same way that people today use sauces and seasonings.
Public baths were another important part of Roman life.
The baths were not only places to wash. They were also social centres where people could meet friends, exercise, relax, talk about business, and hear the latest news. Large bath complexes could contain hot rooms, warm rooms, cold pools, exercise areas, and gardens.
For many Romans, visiting the baths was part of everyday life.
Entertainment was also extremely popular. One of the most famous forms of Roman entertainment was gladiator fighting. Gladiators fought in large arenas, and thousands of people came to watch.
The Colosseum in Rome is probably the best-known Roman arena today. It could hold tens of thousands of spectators. Events could include gladiator fights, animal hunts, and other public shows.
However, the life of a gladiator was dangerous. Some gladiators were enslaved people or prisoners, while others chose to become gladiators because successful fighters could earn money and become famous. Not every fight ended in death, as trained gladiators were valuable and took a long time to prepare.
Romans also loved chariot racing.
These races were often held in huge stadiums such as the Circus Maximus. Teams of horses pulled chariots around a track at high speed. Accidents were common, and the sport could be extremely dangerous. Famous chariot drivers sometimes became celebrities and could earn large amounts of money.
The Roman army played a major role in the success of the empire.
Roman soldiers were highly organized and trained. They did more than fight battles. They also built roads, bridges, forts, and walls. This helped Rome control distant areas and move soldiers and supplies quickly.
Roman roads were one of the empire’s greatest achievements. Thousands of kilometres of roads connected cities across Roman territory. Many were built carefully with several layers of stone, which made them strong and long-lasting.
These roads were not created only for ordinary travellers. Their main purpose was often military. If a rebellion started in a distant region, Roman soldiers could move there more quickly.
The Romans were also excellent engineers.
They built aqueducts, which carried fresh water from distant sources into cities. Water was used in public fountains, baths, and some private homes. Roman engineers built bridges, tunnels, temples, theatres, and large public buildings, some of which can still be seen today.
Education was important, but not every child had the same opportunities.
Children from wealthy families were more likely to receive formal education. Boys often studied reading, writing, mathematics, public speaking, and literature. Some girls from rich families were educated at home, but many girls received less formal education than boys.
Family life was strongly controlled by the father, who traditionally had great authority over the household. Roman society had clear social classes, and a person’s wealth and family background strongly influenced their opportunities.
Religion also played a major role in Roman life.
Romans believed in many gods and goddesses. Jupiter was seen as the king of the gods, while Mars was connected with war, Venus with love, and Neptune with the sea. People prayed to different gods for help with different parts of life.
Over time, however, Roman religion changed. Christianity slowly spread through the empire. At first, Christians were sometimes punished because they refused to follow certain Roman religious practices. Later, Christianity became accepted and eventually became the empire’s main religion.
Although the Roman Empire became extremely powerful, it did not last forever.
The empire faced many problems, including political struggles, economic difficulties, attacks from outside groups, and problems controlling such a large territory. In the year 476 CE, the Western Roman Empire came to an end.
But Rome’s influence did not disappear.
Roman law influenced later legal systems. Roman architecture inspired buildings across Europe and beyond. Latin developed into languages such as Italian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Romanian. Many English words also came from Latin.
Even today, people walk on Roman roads, visit Roman buildings, study Roman ideas, and use systems influenced by Roman law and government.
Ancient Rome is interesting not only because of emperors and wars. It also helps us understand how ordinary people lived, worked, ate, travelled, relaxed, and entertained themselves.
In many ways, Roman life seems very distant from our own. Yet in other ways, it feels surprisingly familiar. Romans worried about housing, enjoyed sports, went shopping, complained about traffic, met friends, followed celebrities, and looked for entertainment.
Perhaps this is one reason Ancient Rome continues to fascinate people today.
